Vitamin D associated with 25% or more decreased risk of COVID death, study finds

Vitamin D associated with 25% or more decreased risk of COVID death, study findslifesitenews.com

Lockdowns kept people out of the sun, which is a crucial source of vitamin D

(LifeSiteNews) — Deaths from COVID-19 could have been reduced by widespread promotion of something as simple as increasing vitamin D intake, according to a study published this month by the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports.

The study, by a team of researchers from multiple institutions including Johns Hopkins, the Universities of Michigan and Illinois, and the National Bureau of Economic Research, observed a pool of U.S. veterans and found that “Vitamin D2 and D3 fills were associated with reductions in COVID-19 infection of 28% and 20%, respectively,” and with decreased mortality by 25% and 33%, respectively.

The study also found that the benefits of this “safe, widely available, and affordable treatment” were greater in proportion to the size of the vitamin dosage. “Our findings are especially relevant to the US population, given that about half of Americans are estimated to have sub-optimal vitamin D serum levels.”

The findings, which echo those of past research, suggest that the toll of the pandemic (more than 1.1 million deaths in the United States as of November 23) could have been mitigated in at least one way far simpler and less burdensome than the policies urged by the federal government and adopted by most states, from mask mandates to forced lockdowns on in-person business and public gatherings.

Among the evidence against such policies is the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s (CDC’s) September 2020 admission that masks cannot be counted on to keep out COVID when spending 15 minutes or longer within six feet of someone, and a May 2020 study published by the peer-reviewed CDC journal Emerging Infectious Diseases that “did not find evidence that surgical-type face masks are effective in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza transmission, either when worn by infected persons (source control) or by persons in the general community to reduce their susceptibility.”

Last May, another study found that, though mandates effectively increased mask use, that usage did not yield the expected benefits. “Mask mandates and use (were) not associated with lower SARS-CoV-2 spread among U.S. states” from March 2020 to March 2021. In fact, the researchers found the results to be a net negative, with masks increasing “dehydration … headaches and sweating and decreas[ing] cognitive precision,” and interfering with communication, as well as impairing social learning among children. Dozens of studies have found the same.

Lockdowns were even more devastating according to research. Last March, the left-wing Associated Press admitted that “California and Florida have experienced almost identical outcomes in COVID-19 case rates,” despite the former imposing some of the most draconian lockdown measures in the country and the latter remaining mostly open, and that the mortality gulf between Connecticut and South Dakota was similarly small despite the wide gulf in their responses to the virus.

In April 2021, Simon Fraser University economics professor Douglas Allen published a study concluding that while lockdowns saved 22,333 years’ worth of lost life worldwide, they also caused 6.3 million years of lost life, making the policies’ net long-term harm 282 times worse than their benefits, thanks to the combined toll of canceled or delayed care for other medical issues, and the psychological harm of lost jobs and social isolation, among other factors.

In February 2022, a meta-analysis published in Johns Hopkins University’s Studies in Applied Economics found that “lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality,” but have “imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted.”

In April, the fiscally conservative Committee to Unleash Prosperity (CUP) ranked all 50 states on the equally weighted metrics of health, economic, and educational outcomes. They gave 18 states an A or B grade. Of those, 16 were led by Republican governors, including the top six performers: Utah, Nebraska, Vermont, Montana, South Dakota, and Florida. By contrast, the six states and jurisdictions to receive an F grade are all led by Democrats: Illinois, California, New Mexico, New York, the District of Columbia, and New Jersey.

“We each have vitamin D receptor cells that, through a chain of reactions starting with conversion of cholesterol in the skin, produce vitamin D3 when they’re exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) from the sun,” according to Dr. David J. Leffell, chief of the Dermatologic Surgery program at Yale Medicine.

“From about late March/early April to the end of September, most people should be able to make all the vitamin D they need from sunlight,” says the United Kingdom’s National Health Service. “The body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors. But between October and early March we do not make enough vitamin D from sunlight.”

  1. Vitamin C and zinc (if you can handle it) are also good –
(maybe not 3 years ago) but I thought everyone knew that by now.

Seriously though vitamins D and C (zinc too – but not a massive amount, that would be bad) are always good.

Many people say that too much Vitamin C will just be pissed away – well I’ll take too much over not enough.

With some vitamins and minerals, only a trace amount is needed any more than that will have detrimental results.

  2. These reports are more than a little bit annoying and I speak from knowledge of virology and biochemistry and yes in fact I worked on corona in grad school.
There is no “covid”. You cannot alter the corona genome to any significant extent and have it replicate to any decent level, much less infect someone.

Injecting any animal with nucleic acids however, will produce various autoimmune diseases as well as an overblown response to the common cold corona – this can indeed kill.

But yeah, vitamin D3 is good for you but useless without K2 to get the calcium where it needs to go and out of the bloodstream. Vitamin C in moderation, too much and you’re breaking down bone to neutralize the acidity. But copper selenium boron and glucosamine are more important due to our chem fertilized foods.
