I Know You

“I Know You”

A Short Story

(originally published December, 2019)

The room was bathed in stubbornness, neither party wanting to bend the knee or any other body part to the other.

I’d seen this so many times before that I could predict the outcome, and rather than referee the arguing, I simply curled up in a ball on the sofa and let out a heavy sigh.

My observations of life here are seldom asked for, sadly, for I am much wiser than most suspect. Why? Because I observe 24/7/365, unlike most others who seem to cast their glances inward, hoping to catch a glimpse of sanity when real sanity is experienced outside themselves by the love they give to others.

Hey…my job is to provide love each and every day of the year. I do so with an exquisite delivery. I care not what they are feeling when they come home. I care not what they look like, I don’t even care what they are feeling, for I have the antidote to whatever darkness they have encountered during their day.  I have an endless supply of love to give.

I can be relentless in what I give. I want to make it not just known, but understood deep in their bones, in their hearts, heads and souls, how much I love them. And more importantly, to know, without any doubt, that I expect nothing from them – I love them unconditionally.

I am quick to forgive their dallies, their shortcomings, their ignorance, their fixated gaze upon themselves, for I force them to acknowledge my love for them. A pat on my head, a scratch behind my ear, and more importantly than anything, if they allow me to lay my head upon their lap as they rest on the couch or bed, I know I’ve got them. As they stroke my ears, hearing my contented groans, I know my job this day is complete.  I’ve provided them with the unconditional love that I was created to give.

Since hardly a soul asks for my observations, maybe think of this…I am DOG – reverse the letters and you might get it.

Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring–it was peace.”― Milan Kundera
